...Suddenly the seriousness of Whitbread sailing is a reality. From our relatively secure life below deck we are cast into total dark- ness, not to mention a wind and coldness reminiscent of our November storms in Sweden. The sea thunders and ice cold water sprays over the deck. We alternate between crawling and stumbling astern towards the cockpit behind the helmsman. The noise from the breaking waves and the spray make us huddle up to protect ourselves as best we can.
