Hvordan vurderer I standen?

Community and Individuality in South India Individuality is often viewed as an exclusively Western value. In non-Western societies, collective identities seem to eclipse those of individuals. These generalities, however, have overlooked the importance of personal uniqueness, volition, and achievement in these cultures. This book weaves together personal life stories, historical description, and theoretical analysis to define individuality in South Asia and to distinguish it from its Western counterpart. Programme, Myth, Reality Summary: Eric Hobsbawm's brilliant enquiry into the question of nationalism won further acclaim for his 'colossal stature ... his incontrovertible excellence as an historian, and his authoritative and highly readable prose'. Recent events in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet republics have since reinforced the central importance of nationalism in the history of political evolution and upheaval. This second edition has been updated in the light of those events, with a final chapter addressing the impact of the dramatic changes that have taken place. It also includes additional maps to illustrate nationalities, languages and political divisions across Europe in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries Titel: Nations and nationalism since 1780 : programme, myth, reality Forfatter: Eric Hobsbawm Forlag: Cambridge University Press Udgivelsesår: 1992 Sider: 220 Sprog:

Summary: "In recent years, a large number of theoretical models have been developed to try and make sense of today's complex global society. This text identifies eight distinct models of global studies, such as Americanization, Homogenization, Balkanization and Creolization, enabling the reader to make sense of the full range of global issues and contending views on the existing world order. Within each module, present theoretical literature and key current issues are addressed with boxed case studies. Paying particular attention to human rights, the book provides students with the theoretical grounding and practical knowledge necessary for an understanding of globalization. This book explains the challenges and redefines the core theories of globalization. Using fascinating case studies to illustrate how each model works in practice, the chapters look at society, culture, politics and e

This work provides an account of culture in an age of globalization. Ulf Hannerz argues that, in an ever-more interconnected world, national understandings of culture have become insufficient. He explores the implications of boundary-crossings and long-distance cultural flows for established notions of "the local", "community", "nation" and "modernity" Hannerz not only engages with theoretical debates about culture and globalization but raises issues of how we think and live today. His account of the experience of global culture encompasses a shouting match in a New York street about Salman Rushdie, a papal visit to the Maya Indians; kung-fu dancers in Nigeria and Rastafarians in Amsterdam; the nostalgia of foreign correspondents; and the surprising experiences of tourists in a world city or on a Borneo photo safari. Summary: "Transnational Connections provides a lucid account of culture
