From the Middle Ages to the Present

The first general history of the evolution of European states and nations from medieval times to the present.

'Schulze demonstrates a high level of competence in tracing the growth of the nation and the state from the time of Charlemagne to the reign of Napoleon. But it is in his account of that point in the early nineteenth century when the nation and state fuse that his book achieves brilliance. Choice

This book describes the twin evolutions of nation and state from the Middle Ages to the present and links them to stages in European cultural history. The author contrasts the development of the state in different parts of Europe and shows how the concept merged with the idea of the nation in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The modern idea of the nation state, he argues, is rooted in the fundamental changes that took place during the industrial, political and cultural evolutions of this period.

Alongside the history of the nation the author charts successive stages in the
development of nationalism, offering an explanation of why it was that in the
decades preceding the twentieth century the concept of the nation began to take hold of the people at large. The final part of the book traces the attempts in Western Europe since 1945 to come to terms with nationalism, and examines the implications of the rise of nationalism in Central and Eastern Europe.

Hagen Schulze is Professor of Modern German and European History at the Free University in Berlin. Friedrich Meinecke Institute. His previous books include The Course of German Nationalism. From Frederick the Great to Bismarck. 1763-1867 (1991) and Nation-Building in Central Europe (1987).

Hvordan vurderer I standen?

Empire by Integration bog fra Oxford University Press

Empire" by Integration is the first comprehensive survey of the American policy towards European integration from 1945. Geir Lundestad argues that, unlike other Great Powers, the United States strongly supported the integration of the most important area under its influence: Western Europe. This integration was, however, to take place within an American-dominated Atlantic framework. In the provocative words of the author this was a policyof "empire" by integration. Professor Lundestad takes a clear, chronological approach to the subject, from the beginnings of European integration after the Second World War, the challenge to American policy on European integration by President Charles de Gaulle, and the modified support for European integration in the Nixon-Kissinger years through to the present revived support for European integration under the Clinton administration. Offering insight and equal consideration into the societies of the "civilized" and "uncivilized" world, "Europe and the People Without History" deftly explores the historical trajectory of so-called modern globalization. In this foundational text about the development of the global political economy, Eric R. Wolf challenges the long-held anthropological notion that non-European cultures and people were isolated and static entities before the advent of European colonialism and imperialism. Ironically referred to as "the People Without History" by Wolf, these societies before active colonization possessed perpetually changing, reactionary cultures and were indeed just as intertwined into the processes of the pre-Columbian global economic system as their European counterparts. Utilizing Marxian concepts and a vivid consideration for the importance of history, Wolf judiciously traces the eff
