Dr. David Scharff explores the role of sexuality in human relationships by combining his extensive experience in individual, marital, family and sex therapy with theoretical contributions from psychoanalytic object relations theory and child development. He sees sexual relationships as the physical aspect of primary emotional bonds, reflecting the internal world of individuals and in turn influencing these internal worlds. Individual chapters deal with the contribution of the mother-infant relationship, the relevance of attachment theory, the childhood and adolescent origins of sexual difficulty, and problems in marriage from courtship to old age. Special attention is given to the mutual influence of parental sexual life and the growth of children, to extramarital affairs, and to an interactional definition of sexual maturity.
