Titel: Portrait of a Turkish family
The protagonists of this story, in addition to the writer’s family, are Istanbul itself and all the varied society of notables, petty bourgeois and commoners who live there, so that the book presents various levels of reading ranging from the private story of the protagonist – with pages on childhood that are among the most beautiful in twentieth-century literature – to the culture and customs of a country that has always been a bridge between East and West in a crucial period of its history: from the fall of the Sultan and the Ottoman Empire to Kemal Ataturk’s revolution.

Sammendrag: Irfan Orga was born into a prosperous family of the old Turkey under the Sultans. His mother was a beauty, married at thirteen, who lived in the total seclusion befitting her class. His grandmother, who also lived in their home, was an eccentric autocrat, determined at all costs to maintain her traditional habits. The First World War, however, brought ruin to the family and transformation to Turkey. The red fez was ousted by the cloth cap, and the family was forced to adapt to an unimaginably impoverished life. In 1941 Irfan Orga arrived in London where, seven years later, he wrote this extraordinary story of his family's survival.

Hvordan vurderer I standen?

An extended family gathers in late August to celebrate the seventy-fifth birthday of its formidable matriarch, Leonora. She is the daughter of the famous Edwardian painter Ethan Walsh, whose paintings are kept at the family home, Willow Court in Wiltshire. At Leonora's house party will be her daughters, Gwen and Rilla, whom she raised alone after she was widowed in her late twenties; Rilla's stepdaughter Beth; and Gwen's husband and three children with their spouses and lovers. One outsider joins the group: Sean Everard, a television director who's making a documentary about the life and work of Ethan Walsh. All families have their dark side and Leonora's is no exception. By the time the marquee is dismantled and all the guests have gone their separate ways, two shocking past events have come to light, to rock complacency and change for ever the lives of Leonora and her daughters. Visse mennesker er blevet immune over for ensomhed.
